December 2007 — The Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007 was signed into law by President Bush. This bill establishes a federal mandate for the EPA to issue voluntary school site selection guidelines that account for the special vulnerability of children to hazardous substances or pollution exposures in any case in which the potential for contamination at a potential school site exists. This is a step in the right direction, but voluntary guidelines are not enough.
